Stevia is about 1000 times as sweet as sugar. Who needs sugar?

Problem with stevia is that it can leave a bitter aftertaste sometimes. But I am curious about the components of this sweetener. Is this theoretically based on L(-)glucose, which is the mirror image of D(+) glucose that humans can and do digest [L(-) is just as sweet but not metabolized]. There was an attempt several decades ago in Maryland to market L(-)glucose (Gilbert V. Levin), but it did not seem to gain traction.
