Under the Assads, there was over 40 years of government stability in Syria, until the "Arab Spring". Whether it's his generals, his opposition or ISIS that takes over from him, Syria will be split into warring factions for years to come-- like a re-run of the situation in Iraq. This is the legacy of the French and British Empires chopping up the Middle East to suit their purposes after WW I, regardless of ethnic demographics. Look at any map of the Middle East... can you find any other area of the world where borders run for so many hundreds of kilometers in straight lines?
