In reality only a tiny minority of british university students participate in NUS or its elections. I think legislation is proposed to ensure individuals choose to opt in and sign up. Votes must represent the majority membership in secret ballots, not the minority system we have now. In some Universities less than 5% take part in electing SU Reps. The growth of muslim students on UK campus is feeding this movement, funny this coincides with a decline in HE standards outside of the top Universities. As the UK Govt, does not support BDS it really is time to have legislation in place that makes it illegal for public funded bodies to impose their own decisions on UK Foreign Policy. Infact the NUS vote will little real impact as NUS do not run Universities , like the Academic Programmes and University Policy. So SU canteens will no longer stock IL produce. No big impact as most UK students eat junk food anyway!

There are many students who come from the lower economic side of the ladder who are either given scholarships or grants. Not every university student in the UK can afford to pay the fees. They are, yes, receiving government help.
