1. if she feels this way, why did she agree 2 move?
Jew-C ,   JewLandia (Israel)   (02.27.16)
really, she could have, should have said "No, thank you, I am satisfied with my seat." and because she is both an American and an Israeli and because this El Al flight originated in the United States El Al would have to find a different solution to THEIR problem. But no, instead this charming lady said, "I will move." and now with regret in her heart she has filled a suit which will go no where.
2. Renee Rabinowitz deserves our highest accolades.
Michael ,   California, USA   (02.27.16)
She deserves the Pras Israel for her determination to fight discrimination by Haredim and by the El Al airline. She deserves compensation in excess of ten million shekels and lifetime eligibility for free flights. She is my hero of the day, of the week, of the year! Bravo, bravo Renee Rabinowitz.
3. EL AL is public transport - not shul
ASTRONAUT ,   USA   (02.27.16)
With all due respect, Mr. Orthodox, you knowingly purchased a ticket on a public airline; fully aware that there'd be a 50% likelihood you'd be seated next to a woman. If you and your chaverim insist on flying segregated, then pool your shekels together and establish Uber-Orthodox Airlines - and here is your company motto: "Our Attendants Can Seat-ya on Both Sides of The Mechitzah!" Shabbat Shalom.
4. the ticket reservation system doesn't yet include gender??
(02.27.16)
Public space are for all the public to use unless there is a severe security reason
5. Renee Rabinowitz is 81 years old or 81 days old?
(02.27.16)
She acts like an immature baby with little dignity. A refined Jewish woman who was raised in an ultra-orthodox home and received a religious education should know better than starting up with G-d's Torah. She still observes the Sabbath and what else? Good thing at least one grandchild came back to her parents' and ancestors' way of life.
6. a good way to make money
simon ,   kfar saba, Israel   (02.27.16)
I don't know if the idea of suing was hers, or that of her children, or grandchildren, but I think that after her trip, she had told family members what occurred, and they thought it a good idea to sue, and make a lot of money over the issue. If she was truly against moving her seat, she would have been indignant at once and made a scene at the time, and refuse to move. However, this was not the case. She and her family are just trying to make easy money. Shame on her and them! There is nothing wrong with asking a flight attendant to help them change a seat to be more comfortable during a flight. It would be nice if airlines gave people an ability to choose before the flight to sit near someone of their own gender. If anyone should sue, it should be the orthodox man for not being allowed to begin with to sit next to another man, and having to be troubled to have to ask flight attendant for assistance!
7. Civil/Human Rights Issue
Jibril Abbas ,   USA   (02.28.16)
Finally, finally....this is addressed with the religious fanatics. Can we imagine American Airlines changing the seat of a female passenger because a Muslim refuses to sit beside her? NO ONE has the right for religious reasons to legally obligate another person OR company such as El Al to act on their behalf on religious grounds. Civil Rights are compromised based on religion in Israel. El Al MUST act NOW. You don't want to sit where you have a seat.....get off the plane. Period.
8. shame on this lady and machael
sara rabinovitz ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (02.28.16)
can't you recognize someone trying to make a fast buck? Michael, do you hate the orthodox so much that you can't see a scheme? shame on you!
9. to the ASTRONAUT
James ,   Manchester, England   (02.28.16)
I think this astronaut lacks common courtesy and should be sent to the moon, and be allowed to stay there. As he lacks sensitivity and common courtesy! He also lacks good business sense, for it behooves businesses to do their best to satisfy their customers. I praise El Al for having good sense to try to satisfy all. Why shouldn;t people be allowed a pleasant journey?
10. Seating
Mordechai ,   Beit Shemesh   (02.28.16)
The answer is simple and sraightforward, no one should agree to change seat, if it doesn't suit someone they can leave the plane and try their luck on a different flight. There is nothing in the airline contract about having to change seat if a fellow passenger wishes to do so. it is encumbent upon the passenger who is dsissatisfied to solve the problem by either accepting the seat they chose when booking or which was allocated to them. Enough of these parasites and their demands. likewise anyone who moves seats on a bus is similalry incorrect.
11. Ultra Orthadox causing trouble again
Yoni   (02.28.16)
May be his royal holiness should learn to control his sexual urges when sitting next to an 81 year old grandmother.
12. number 5 newsflash Gadol HaDor HaRav M. Feinstein
Jew-C ,   JewLandia (Israel)   (02.27.16)
poskaned on this question. His answer was that in public spaces such as buses, trains, and airplanes out of respect for the TORAH men are allowed to sit next to women. So nameless one at 5 what say you now?
13. El-Al
Philip ,   Israel   (02.28.16)
Another reason why I refuse to fly El-Al.
14. being forced or just asked?
Larry ,   LA (formerly)   (02.28.16)
What this lady forced to move or just asked? Seems she was given a better place to sit and not forced. I have been on planes and asked to move to accommodate people. I have always been asked courteously and never forced. From what little is in the story it does not mention the fact that she was forced against her will to move. Seems like this lawyer is plying her trade to make some 'late evening' money!
15. Congratulations to Mis. Rabinowitz!
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (02.28.16)
16. #8 sara: The answer to your question is YES!
Michael ,   California, USA   (02.28.16)
17. What if there's no monetary compensation?
BUILD BABY BUILD !!!   (02.28.16)
Perhaps the lady wanted to make a point, she paid for her ticket and should expect to be treated with dignity and equality not be asked to accommodate a bigot who could have asked to sit next to a male passenger in the first place.
18. discrimination lawsuit - bogus
a b ,   modi'in israel   (02.28.16)
Ridiculous. She has no case against the airline. The airline didn’t discriminate against anyone. Every airline tries to accommodate any person’s idiosyncrasy. The case doesn’t have a “prayer”… And there’s NO sexism involved AT ALL. His wife wouldn’t sit next to ANY strange man at all, either. so this is NOT about degrading anyone. No case.
