thus commanded g-d moses to say to pharaoh in the book of exodus. the laws of moses as they have been stated in the book of exodus gave humanity the most advanced set of laws that have not been surpassed to this day. these laws command a day of rest, the setting up of courts of law, proprtionality in punishing crimes, the freeing of slaves after seven years, kindness toward strangers, charity for orphans and widows, prohibition against spoils of war if the enemy surrenders. the prohibitions against murder, theft, bearing false witness, the prohibition against hatred for parents, or eating torn flesh, all of these laws and others not mentioned, set up the modern ethics and laws of civilisation. passover celebrates jewish self determination. it celebrates the freedom of the israelites from bondage and the establishment of a jewish homeland. passover also celebrates the formation of an ethical society based on laws that are advanced and which are based on individual justice. the israelites could not enter their land until the laws of moses were given to them. the jewish state does its very best to protect its own people, but also to prevent unnecessary harm to its many enemies.
