The first 2 submarines where free-the 3rd was also 50% payed by germany. So its not so expensive as it looks like.

5. Yaalon hates Netanyahu and the navy needs new subs

Moshe Yaalon is bitter little man he is unhappy that Netanyahu went behind his back to buy subs and later he was forced to give up the defense job in favor of Liberman so Netanyahu could hold his coalition together and now he wants to destroy Netanyahu. He was probably against the purchase because there is a cultural attitude in the IDF that only the ground and air forces matter and if we must have a navy they should not get any substantial funds. 6-7 more F35 are preferable to subs in their logic. The subs are needed because it is the only real weapon Israel can take as far as places like Iran. It takes 10 years between contract signinig and delivery of 3 submarines and in 10 years the first 3 Dolphins will be up for retirement and the second batch approaching mid life. There is also no gurantee that any future German Chancellor will be as pro Israel as Merkal and not give us funding deals so we may not even be able to afford any new subs anyway. This whole scandal is an attempt by the left and Yaalon to bring down Netanyahu.

The arguments against buying the new subs by Yaalon who just wants to destroy Netanyahu make no sense. He says we do not know what threats we will face in future so no need to buy them. He is right we do not know what threats we will face in 10 years and they might be worse but if we do not buy these subs now in 10 years the first 3 Dolphins will be up for retirement and we will have nothing new to replace them. Iran already has alot more subs than Israel, Egypt has just bought 4 and Saudi Arabia is planning to buy 25 whilst Israel will have in 10 years 3 operational subs all approaching mid life. It would be short term saving long term cost because in 10 years the IDF would need to buy more than 3 subs if they want more than 3 in future.
