First Peres & now Rivlin the role of president is being taken from ceremonial to political. The reality of life in Israel has also changed greatly since Ben Gurion. The country has grown more and more secular and sadly as a result of having no state Jews have preferred integration to leadership and without legislation there is nothing to stop Israelis integrating and agreeing to end the idea of a Jewish state which is unpopular abroad. The arabs are also growing in numbers and they have a growing political influence with Joint List being 3rd largest party. We need legislation to save us from our own domestic problems.
