The US effort at mediation is a joke.

Palestinians are divided, so there can be no peace.
Palestinians approach unity, so there can be no negotiations without preconditions.

For Palestinians this so called standing army in Gaza and the infrastructure and weapons takes up to 50% of the $2billion each year that the PA pay to Gaza

Apart from the $100m the PA pay in blood money Hamas also pay undisclosed large sums of blood money to their own 'martyrs' as well as huge sums to maintain the lavish lifestyle of their 'elites'

Most of whats left is used to pay salaries and wages leaving virtually NOTHING for infrastructure and development

So diverting resources from armed conflict to rebuilding in Gaza is in the Palestinian national interest...and happens to converge with Israels national interest..

But Israel choose to frame this not as a matter of joint and mutual benefit but bombastically as more asymmetric leverage

Because Israel COULD have said..they could help to facilitate the process of disarmanent by guaranteeing Gazas borders and not merely demanding unilateral disarmament with reciprocity
