If President Trump does have the guts to announce the USA's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, it will be a great step forward in the peace process. Abbas used the 'with east Jerusalem as our capital' line for a decade and it only served to delay peace talks. No other capital city on the planet is divided as Abbas wanted, so why even consider it?
By announcing the recognition by the USA, the pathetic and simply untrue pronouncements by UN offices that there's no Jewish historical link to Jerusalem is finally put to rest. The UN's attempt to remove and deny the 3,000 year relationship between the Jews and Jerusalem is exposed for what it is: a lie propagated the UN's Muslim block.
Maybe Mr. Abbas will take the opportunity to now move forward with a real peace plan, now that the exasperating question of what to do with Jerusalem has been answered.
Along with President Trump's recognition comes added responsibilities on Israel: no more 'second class' infrastructure, schools, roads, utilities, etc., for east Jerusalem- upgrading announcements should happen almost immediately after Trump's declaration.
With Israel in control of all Jerusalem, including security, tourism and commerce will expand tremendously. Arab shopkeepers will finally be able to make a comfortable living as Israelis and tourists return.
The real question is whether or not the Arabs will take this opportunity to change their lives for the better, or to miss this opportunity and to continue the Abbas record of accomplishing nothing, year after year after year.
