Steve Benassi ,   Minneapolis USA   (12.17.17)
2. The great Putin has been duped by the Iranians
MadDad ,   Johannesburg   (12.17.17)
He is doing their bidding while thinking he is in control
Wake up Mr Putin- Iran is a fundamentalist state and will bite the hand that feeds it as soon as it can
3. the Sunni uprising is put down?
Cameron   (12.17.17)
The majority of the population is still in open revolt.
4. America has been wanting out of ME since Iraq debacle.
David Turner   (12.17.17)
Bush followed his Defense and Joint Chiefs in avoiding confronting Iran, openly funding and even leading Iraqi Shia insurgents against US forces; declined to act against Iranian nuclear program which he turned over to Obama. Obama turned to Putin to save him from acting on his "red line" against Assad thereby providing Russia opening to replace the US. And today Putin, with bases in Syria and Egypt is the paramount force in the region, influencer of unfolding events. Has studiously kept good offices with Israel throughout regarding Hezbollah and Iran. If the US peace plan takes hold as outlined Israel retains all from Jerusalem to the settlements in exchange for which the Palestinians get a large chunk of N.Sinai. All in all not a bad outcome and America's last hurrah: Trump's Grand Deal.
5. Isn't a sincere "Thank you" and a bear hug enough for Putin
Alan   (12.17.17)
6. the Persians play the stronger hand
Cameron   (12.17.17)
Shiite troops, not Russian jets or equipment, are the all important deciding factor that truly saved Assad, and it really is only those Persian controlled forces which will keep him ruling from Damascus.

Assad is utterly dependent upon Shiite forces in the Syrian hills.

The Persians hold the final winning ace in this balance of Syrian power.
7. Assad is a megalomaniac
C   (12.17.17)
this man suffers from delusions of grandeur.
in particular, he thinks that he alone can rule all of syria.
he uses the most horrific atrocities to impose his will on the people,
including forced starvation on large portions of the population.
400,000 people are under siege in suburbs of damascus. children
are starving to death while assad refuses to let aid enter
the region.

putin should abandon assad and make peace with the united
states and its allies.
russia has common cultural ties with the west. furthermore,
russia does not have sufficient power to fight the muslims.
the eu also made the mistake to cozy up to muslim states.
today, europe is under constant threat from its muslim
population.
8. No one is leaving, the opposite is happening
Tehraniporou   (12.17.17)
each player will seek without saying so to strengthen its position. What worries me is that Khamenei has even sent people from the artesh to Syria, he will not back down no matter what nutsyahuu utters. What some people call the revival of the Persian empire will finally allow the Iranians backed forces to control the shipping lanes. You will not have the army or the IRGC at 5km of the Golan but what about in Damascus. Will the IDF shoot down permanent Iranian bases in Damascus filled with the Artesh and not the IRGC? Iran is smart to use proxies but at some point it will project forces directly. Multilateral talks including Israel, the Turks, the Iranians and the arab states is needed. The issues of the region should be resolved at some point by the people of the region.
9. Assad mafia is in no position to control all of Syria even
Rafi ,   US   (12.17.17)
... if ALLOWED to do so by the "greater" powers, Russia, Iran and Turkey.

The only "sure" areas for Assad's clan are northwest Alawi Syria, and perhaps some portions of Damascus. Assad's rule was collapsing until Putin (and Iran) intervened in the civil war.

Russian, Iran and Turkey are ALL SHARKS and LONG historical enemies...

Best for Israel to let them all duke it out over the ruins of Syria...
