They were trying to explain to children the concept of a country being recognized -- or not -- by other countries. But they failed.

Technically speaking, the text is correct: not everybody recognizes Israel, N. Korea, Kosovo etc as states. Some who have commented before me pointed exactly to this argument, but did it ill-heartedly, because the issue here is not to debate whether that statement is correct or not. The issue here is manipulating the mind of the young children. Does anyone honestly believe that a 7-year old kid would really understand the details that are being fiercely debated here ? The 7yo will remain with the subliminal idea that Israel is not a country. That was the editor's intention in the first place (apologies dismissed !), and those who struggle to argue for a `technically correct statement` know it very well. So please stop BS-ing around, most of us are smarter than that !
