Most of Poland looked on while the eradication of Jews took place. Could they have stopped the German nightmare by standing up to the Nazis? Could the townspeople have physically blocked the entrances to the camps without themselves being murdered?

How would any of act if a local family came begging at your doorstep for safety and you knew that harboring this family could easily get your entire family killed? Are you sure your own neighbors wouldn't snitch on you for the reward money? Might they like to live in your house?

What happened in Poland is a disgrace to humanity. But the Poles were stuck between a rock and a hard place: the Poles knew the Nazis would kill them at the slightest provocation and the Nazis made laws requiring the Poles to turn in Jews; it was hard to be a non-participant.

Yes, many Poles turned in Jews for rewards and stolen Jewish property. Too many. But some good Poles did save some Jews, that can't be denied. Alas, too few.

Did Poland save a half of its Jews? Maybe a quarter of its Jews? Ten percent of its Jews? No. That's the sad fact. The Nazis wouldn't have accomplished so much if the Poles, in general, hadn't looked the other way.
