First she boycotted the event and left a vague statement which clearly indicated her support of the riots in Gaza. Then after the backlash she attempted to save herself by implying the issue was another. As you point out, this does nothing to help the damage done to Israel and herself.

Her only course of action to rectify this would be to reverse her decision, and to stop pandering to her left wing peers to try better her career and image.

Ms. Portman, Not that you asked, but my unsolicited, and brief, two-cents. First, I think it's important to my point to state that I identify as a Jew. I was raised in a Jewish family, both sides of my parental family tree for as far back as I am aware. I come from a perspective of love, not Jew-hatred. I do not envy the position you are in. Most of my time online is spent on an anonymous forum where there is a pathological degree of Jew-hatred. Typically I've been online for less than one minute before I encounter the first disparaging remark. You work in an environment, Hollywood, that is ground-zero for their hatred and it is you, not I, that must interact with a constituency within that seethes with hatred toward their stereotypical image of the all-powerful, and uncaring, Jew. Conversely, you also benefit from associating with a portion of the Jewish community that has never experienced such wealth, freedom and influence. You are also a resident of France, quickly becoming one of the more difficult environments for a Jew to live. Again, I do not envy, nor am I judging, the position you are in. You have long been appointed a very public representative of the Jewish community whether desired or otherwise. That said, I do not believe your decision will endear you to the likes of Roger Waters, and company, who have nothing but hatred in their hearts towards our community. Your decision not to accept the Genesis Prize awarded in your honor, I'm afraid, will only be distorted to emphasize their political ideology and, not-so-well-disguised, Jew-hatred. I suspect in the current environment in which we live you will forever be associated with this decision, however unfair it may be.

Israel is a democracy, and Portman is an Israeli citizen who disagrees with government policies. She has every right to refuse to attend an event, even one honoring her. Hers is not a boycott. Disagreement is good in a democracy. To those condemning her, especially government officials, calling her a traitor, calling to strip her of her citizenship, those are the calling cards of fascism. Israelis should know better.
