i knew him and learned with him in the '70's in Jerusalem. he first converted to reform Judaism, I believe in the US, and realized it was not authentic. He was an academic and greatly admired Yeshaya Liebovitz for his many PHDs.
I was never comfortable with him as he considered many things in the Talmud as absurd but the Rabbi we were studying with said to me "don't forget where he came from, he is not like us'.
He then lived in the Jewish quarter in Jerusalem and was pushed by some kind of extremism in his soul.
I was very surprised to see this now but not surprised he turned out a zealot esp winding up a Itamar.
