The article is ambiguous. In one place, it says the sub was found 31 years ago. In another place, it says the sub was found 31 years later. I would guess 31 years ago is more accurate, based on the service dates of Maj.-Gen. (res.) Alex Tal.

The sub was sacrificed to pay back a blood debt with the US navy. Its embarrassing but a better alternative to a war with the US. Its sinking avenges something equally bad that happened a year before, in 1967.

The boat was found 31 years ago? In 1987? And two men claim to have had cellphones back then? According to Wikipedia, it was found on May 24, 1999 - 31 years after it sank, but only 19 years ago. And that date was a Monday, not a Friday as the men stated.

Who knows who sunk the Dakar but it didn't sink by itself.
