The problem is with defining Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people in the same way as, say, France is defined as the nation-state of the French people. In the case of the latter it is possible to be French by nationality and Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, etc. by religion. However, there is some difficulty in being Jewish by nationality and non-Jewish by religion. The obvious solution is to leave 'Jewish' out of the definition of Israel so that it is possible to be both Israeli by nationality and anything else by religion, . This need not result in Israel losing its Jewish character, culture or the Hebrew language. That will be the responsibility of future generations.
