1. As most of stuff in the Middle East, this too makes no sense

2. hamas brought misery and shortages on its residents!
bob kirk   (08.20.18)
hamas is committed to destroying Israel in the name of Islam. It does not care about its people's welfare - hamas sees them as all potential 'martyrs for Islam'. So hamas fires its thousands of rockets at Israel.s cities and the world demands that Israel "show restraint" in its response. How would the U.S. even, with a Democrat as president. react to thousands of rockets fired at its cities? With 'restraint' or .maximum force as it does against isis in Syria?
3. good analysis. no goldin, no quiet!

4. Age related memory decline with Eiland or Yossi Kats Nr 2?
ab   (08.20.18)
The latter one sent trial balloon on behalf of Barak before th Camp Davi :
"Admitting at least 100 thousand palesinians to Israel is only fair"
None had reacted to this idiocy and Barak went ahead: He offered Arafat 100 thousand "refugees" settlement in Israel.
Eiland spins and proves and talks-as if any agremnt with pals has ever hold..Altzheimer ? Rather sign Bibi has capitulated to Hamas and is going to implement Barak's "plan"
5. depressing opinion piece
C   (08.20.18)
giving hamas any legitimacy would be catastrophic.
the ideology of hamas will continue to be the destruction of israel,
but they would claim legitimacy to do so.
recognition of hamas authority in gaza is not the same as recognising
its legitimacy as a government in gaza.
any recognition of hamas as a government would lead to its
recognition as such by others. as a result, israel would no longer
be able to demand that it be listed as a terror organisation.
hamas should never be treated as an equal, or as in any way
legitimate.
6. Another reminder of why Israel SO needs patriotic revolution
Chaim ,   Israel   (08.20.18)
Israel vanquished our moral "Palestinian" foes decades ago. Yet we still allow them to fire rockets on us at will and imprison our citizens in bomb shelters, maim, murder and terrorize us while plotting our demise. Israel insanely REFUSES to act like the victors we are. Eiland is a poster boy for the appeasement idiocy that is the root cause of most of Israel's serious problems. This is yet another reminder of why Israel SO needs a patriotic revolution.
7. Hamas would benefit.
Brad ,   USA   (08.20.18)
Israel would not. Hamas would get time to re-arm and re-supply. Once Hamas was ready to go again, the "ceasefire scam" would be out the window, again, and the lefty nutjob media would not talk about it.
8. "Gaza is a state and has a stable government".
Bill ,   Skokie U.S.A.   (08.21.18)
Mr. Giora Eiland, States in opinion article that Gaza has a stable government that Israel recognizes as the authority there. He also states that the PA. government will not ever be given authority there as the Hamas government was elected by the general population. He also states that it is in Israels best interest to keep Hamas in power there and separate from the west bank. Israel has brought Hamas to its knees! The Hamas government is begging for a deal. The time is right, Israel should not only make a deal, Israel should go as far as it can in this arrangement. Why not recognize Gaza as a Palestinian State. Sign a peace treaty offer them assistance etc: At the same time annex the west bank and offer the Palestinians there equal rights.
Problem over peace deal done. The Palestinians that are know Israeli citizens can claim Jerusalem as their capital they will have the right to self determination, Israels demographic worries will know be gone. Time for deals is over! Its now time to dictate the solution, it just has to be fair and something the International community will accept and embrace. The newly established state of Gaza has a huge offshore natural gas field, the earnings from which would be more than enough to turn the coastal strip into a paradise. The International community would not need to send any more aid. Furthermore when they (Hamas or any future Gaza government) are spending their own money on rehabilitation and infrastructure they will be a whole lot less likely to do anything that might cause it all to be destroyed.
9. gains in Gaza
steve ,   b/s   (08.24.18)
Ynet asks what do the parties have to gain?
I find a question like this banal and superficial. In the short term it means less/no violence between the sides. But that is just about all folks!

All the time that Hamas want's Israel's destruction and gets the support of many of the world's leaders and almost all of the Western media this conflict will drag on and on and on.

The hasbara of the Israeli government has been nothing short of scandalous - clearly the religious status quo is far more important than explaining the situation to the world. These last 40 years the demonization of Israel has been going from strength to strength like it was with the Jews of the world after World War 1. And we all know how that ended !

Israeli arrogance and complacency that believes that world opinion doesn't matter is totally misplaced. Slowly world opinion is turning Israel into the Nazi apartheid state and our government of clowns are apathetic.
