It is a curious judicial system where judges are appointed on the basis of their politics. Surely an effective judiciary needs to be above politics with the sole objective of interpreting and upholding the law. It is often a difficult job and requires a variety of skills, knowledge and experience which only an independent commission not beholden to any political persuasion can undertake. Once you take a position that judges should be appointed by political leaders according how patriotic (whose definition of patriotism?) they are you are on the slippery slope to tyranny.
