The Gazans have 'voted' for Hamas to rule over them and strip the Strip of any semblance of normalcy. Granted, there is a huge amount of propaganda, making Gazans believe they have been abandoned by their Arab / Muslim brothers and that Israel alone is the cause of all disarray and despair. A grassroots movement strong enough and brave enough to confront the bully / mafia of what is Hamas is what is needed. How that succeeds rests squarely with the locals.

1.Negotiate a permanent cease fire without which there can be no desperately needed reconstruction in Gaza

2.Cut back on weapons, blood money and military spending and channel to rebuilding infrastructure

3.Mobilise all Gazas labour resources both skilled and unskilled and draw up a national rebuilding 5 year programme part funded by the international community

4.Establish together with international community DIRECT funding for 24/7 water and electricity provision

5.Establish easier movement of goods and people between Gaza and West Bank for intra Palestinian trade and a unified Palestinian internal market and better societal cohesion

Even these small steps could TRANSFORM Gaza a thousand times more than decades of conflict EVER COULD

Remember Israel maintains a siege of Gaza as a direct result of Hamas unilateral declaration of a perpetual war of destruction against Israel. Israel has a right to prevent the entry of weapons and materials to Hamas in Gaza by every means at its disposal to protect its citizens

Hamas know that a permanent ceasefire would halt the blockade, prevent any further destruction on both sides and kick start the Gaza economy

But as you quite rightly say there is no point in rebuilding when Hamas continue with their relentless attacks on Israel and when the inevitable retaliation causes further destruction and casualties

Gaza is not anyone elses problem but one of Hamas own making and the time will come when Gazans and indeed the wider Palestinian community will hold Hamas directly accountable for their gross betrayal and dismal failures in decades of Hamas repression, exploitation and tyranny
