60 worshipers? They saw the gunman at the front door, and this went on for 10 minutes.
This is survival, so assuredly, there are many items around a beit knesset. Perhaps a kitchen (knives)? blunt objects (bludgeon the person).
I have no idea the lay out of the beit knesset, but could people arrange themselves in an ambush? If multiple people ambushed, I believe if under the right circumstance, this guy could be handled.
No disagreeing calling the police was the number 1 best thing to have done, but since they watched this guy for 10 minutes, unsure when police would arrive, or if he would breach the doors or not, surely it may have been wise for the congregants (assuming they were somewhat capable), to prepare for attack, if escape was not a possibility.
They were blessed in this situation and what I've written above would not easily work if caught completely unaware. Even the best fighters would have trouble in a complete surprise. But keep in mind, in the Chabad shooting in San Diego, one or two of the congregants fought back. I believe in that instance the gun jammed, or something along those lines. All I'm trying to say, is that in such an insane situation, if you are not stunned/shocked/caught completely by surprise, adapt and fight.
Yes, the authorities must do more, but ultimately when all is said and done, you need to rely on yourself, and sometimes unfortunately even that will not work, but if you don't try, it's even worse.
