Syria: US sanctions serve Israeli interests

Damascus condemns sanctions targeting President Bashar Assad, says they will not affect regime's future decisions
Associated Press|
The Syrian government has condemned the US sanctions targetingPresident Bashar Assad.
The US announced on Wednesday it was slapping the sanctions on Assad and six senior aides for the country's brutal crackdown that has killed more than 850 people since a popular uprising began in March.
Syrian state-run TV said on Thursday that the new measures are part of US regional projects that "serve Israeli interests" and will not affect Syria's future decisions.
"The actions the administration has taken today send an unequivocal message to President Assad, the Syrian leadership and regime insiders that they will be held accountable for the ongoing violence and repression in Syria," Acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S. Cohen said in a statement.
