A two-year-old toddler died and another was hospitalized in serious condition Monday night in the city of Limassol in Cyprus after developing a rash and a fever, suspected to be meningococcal disease.
Both children attend a Chabad nursery on the island nation and come from Israeli families.
The hospitalized girl was flown to Israel Tuesday evening to receive treatment in Sheba Medical Center.
Meningococcal disease is caused by bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis. About 1 in 10 people carry the bacteria in the back of their nose and throat without being ill.
