Youngsters detained after breaking into zoo say they meant no harm to animals
TEL AVIV - A group of 15 youngsters aged 20 to 27 were detained Friday morning after breaking into the Ramat Gan zoo, near Tel Aviv.
The youngsters, who are expected to be brought before the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court Friday afternoon, said they meant no harm to the animals and were merely planning to feed the giraffes at the zoo.
Volunteer police officers patrolling the area spotted a group of people scaling the zoo’s fence around 5 a.m. Friday. The officers dispatched reinforcements to the scene and later detained the youngsters.
In addition to the trespassing offence, the detainees were also in possession of ecstasy pills.
A 5-year-old giraffe died at the zoo about two months ago after eating nylon bags, which clogged its stomach. The animals are unable to distinguish the food from its wrapping, and as a result eat everything thrown their way by visitors.
