The Jewish National Fund ("Keren Kayemet L'Yisrael" or KKL) was established in 1901 at the Fifth Zionist Congress in Basel to lead efforts to return Jews to the land of Israel. In this role, the organization was active in purchasing land in the area that would later become Israel.
JNF has also planted more than 200 million trees as part of its extensive afforestation efforts in Israel.
Recently JNF has been involved in a legal battle over its policy to sell land to Jews only and not Arabs. In January 2005, Israel's attorney general decided that JNF-owned land would be sold without discrimination or limits based on whether the buyer is Jewish.
