Hamas man escapes airstrike

IAF fires on vehicle carrying fugitive Qassam cell, but wanted terrorist manages to leap from car seconds before being hit; meanwhile Qassams continue to pummel western Negev communities: Over 25 rocket attacks Sunday leave three Israelis wounded

A Hamas operative managed to escape a targeted assassination attempt by the Israeli Air Force Sunday evening. Palestinian sources reported that and IAF aircraft fired missiles towards a vehicle in Gaza City in which a Palestinian Qassam cell was riding.

According to reports, one person was wounded in the strike, but the chief fugitive managed to escape from the car shortly before it was hit.

Meanwhile, the Qassam barrage on western Negev communities has not let up. A 60-year-old Sderot resident was wounded Sunday from Qassam shrapnel to the face in one of over 25 rocket attacks on western Negev communities throughout the day Sunday. Magen David Adom medics evacuated the victim to the Barzilai hospital in Ashkelon, where his condition took a turn for the worse.

Ever since the assassination of Popular Resistance Committees chief Jamal Abu Samhadana and the tragic incident in which seven Palestinian family members were killed on the Gaza beach, possibly by an IDF shell, the terror organizations have been pummeling Israeli communities with rocket fire, almost without pause.

Over the weekend, 19 rockets were counted on the Israeli side. Following instructions by Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Dan Halutz to halt artillery strikes on Gaza until the end of a probe into the killing to seven civilians by a shell on Gaza beach on Friday, the military was relying on air strikes to quell Qassam fire Sunday morning, but renewed targeted assassinations late in the day.

A Qassam cell was targeted by the air force as its members prepared to launch rockets into Israel. A cell member affiliated with Hamas was killed in the attack and two others were injured in an air strike near Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza. Palestinian witnesses also reported strikes in the Jabaliya refugee camp.

Efrat Weiss contributed to the report.
