India: The way to go

Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues behavioral guidelines for Israeli backpackers overseas

After Israeli tourists managed to infuriate even the most welcoming Indian population, the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided to formulate a list of behavioral guidelines.

The recommendations were posted on the Ministry's website as updated information for Israeli travelers.

A source at the ministry said Wednesday that the Indian population is patient by nature, and usually avoids criticizing tourists visiting its country.

"Despite this, India is a conservative country, and it has become known that dozens of Israeli tourists have infuriated the locals due to inappropriate conduct. Honoring the local population would be welcomed and would prevent unnecessary unpleasantness," the source added.

'Refrain from drinking tea with strangers'

Recommendations formulated recently by the Israeli Embassy in India and the Jerusalem department for Israelis overseas included guidelines such as avoiding physical contact between men and women in public, and a suggestion for women to wear less revealing attire, particularly shorts and tank tops.

Moreover, travelers are also advised to refrain from drinking tea with strangers and accepting sweets, lest they contain drugs. Women are advised not to roam the streets alone at night. Such an act is not customary in India and may be dangerous.

A further recommendation outlines the importance of honoring sacred sites and customs. It should be noted that India's sacred cities span the entire country and include Varanasi, Pushkar and Haridwar. Drinking of alcohol and eating meat is not permitted in these cities.
