Shay Doron says ‘ready for WNBA’

Doron to be first Israeli in WNBA if she makes it through the pre-season draft; 'This is a dream come true,' assistant coach says

“I definitely think I’m ready for the WNBA,” Shay Doron told the website of the world’s leading basketball league after being drafted by the New York Liberty at the WNBA draft camp.

Doron will be the first Israeli in the WNBA if she makes it through the pre-season draft camp.

Brenda Frese is a great coach, and I played with very talented players, Doron said of her time playing with the University of Maryland. “And that’s what I’ll do at the next level too,” she said. She described her time playing for Maryland as full of “wonderful experiences and opportunities,” adding that it prepared her for the next steps of her athletic career.

Eli Rabi, Head Coach for Israel's National Women's Team, said, “The choice is very appropriate, I hoped she would be picked at the end of the second round, but she was picked at the start of it and that was a pleasant surprise.

"If I was a WNBA coach I would pick someone like Shay Doron because on top of her professional ability, she also has the extraordinary mental ability to propel a team forward.

“When Shay told me she was going to play in Maryland I raised an eyebrow, but she said she would make them better,” Rabi said. “I hope she has the chance to prove herself already this year. The team needs someone like Shay with young blood after a few poor seasons, and I’m sure she can help them out.”

Assistant Coach Galit Musai called her selection “a dream come true, for me and for Shay. This is a happy day for me.”

“Shay is modest. She’ll do everything for the team. She’s a winner. She’s everything a coach could wants from a player. Already at age 10 her big dream was to play for New York Liberty, and now it’s coming true for her,” Musai said.
