List of Palestinian prisoners to be released prepared

As promised by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert at Sharm el-Sheik summit, initial list of 250 Palestinians security prisoners is compiled

An initial list of 250 Palestinian prisoners to be released as part of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's good will gesture to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has been drafted.

Olmert announced that he would release Palestinian prisoners at the Sharm el-Sheik summit some two weeks ago, and appointed Justice Ministry Director-General Moshe Shilo to compile the list.

On the eve of the four-way summit, the prime minister's office stated that there were no plans to release Palestinian prisoners in order to strengthen Abbas.

Nonetheless, the next day Olmert promised Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Jordan's King Abdullah and Abbas that he would discuss the matter of a prisoner release at the upcoming cabinet meeting.

The list that was compiled will go through further security screening, and the final list will be coordinated with the political echelon.

The final list will be divided into prisoners that were tried in military court or administrative detention, and prisoners who were tried in civil court.

The releases of prisoners tried in the military court will need the signature of Defense Minister Ehud Barak, and the release of civil prisoners will need the signatures of Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann and President Shimon Peres.
