Tel Aviv will be bathed in candlelight on Thursday, March 27. As one of 20 cities to join the Earth Hour initiative, residents will be asked to turn off the lights for one hour that evening in order to raise awareness for the growing danger posed to planet earth by greenhouse gas emissions.
Along with Tel Aviv’s restaurants, pubs and coffee shops, which will shut off their lights for one hour that evening, between 8 and 9 pm local time, and will even offer diners special menus by romantic candlelight, many local businesses have also pledged to shut off the lights in their office buildings as part of Earth Hour.
Chairman of the Tel-Aviv Restaurant, Coffee Shop and Bar Union, Ronen Arditi, stated that “Tel Aviv’s restaurants, bars and pubs are the display window to the city’s nightlife, and I am sure that by participating in the Earth Hour initiative they will attract even more earth-conscious customers who want to make a statement about joining together to save the earth’s resources.”
Arditi further noted that “candlelight dinners are not only far more romantic, they might be a vital first step toward conserving energy and securing a better future for us all.”
Organizers of the earth hour initiative noted that the aim of the project is not to conserve energy per say, but to demonstrate that we can all, as individuals, band together in order to conserve energy and reduce harmful emissions that pollute our planet.
The first annual Earth Hour took place in Sydney, Australia in 2007. The city dimmed the lights in its trademark opera house and harbor bridge for over an hour, with residents and local businesses also following suit.
The marked success of the Sydney campaign quickly turned Earth Hour into an international initiative. More than 20 cities across Asia, Africa, North America and Europe will take place in this campaign this year, including Tel Aviv which is the only Middle Eastern representative honoring Earth Hour.
On Thursday, March 27, at 8 pm local time, it will be lights out in Tel Aviv in hopes for a cleaner, greener future for us all.
