One hoop-shot away from peace

While ceasefire seems like long-shot, Palestinian, Israeli basketball teams practice friendship by simply playing ball

The Palestinians have certainly won this match: A basketball team comprised of Arab-Israelis, American students, and Palestinian residents from Ramallah and Bethlehem beat the Foreign Ministry’s basketball team with a final score of 48:62, in a friendly game held in Jerusalem high school.

The Foreign Ministry team is headed by Herzel Edri, the ministry’s Basketball Coordinator, and is comprised of diplomats and office workers familiar with Palestinian issues from the reading and writing of position papers.

After the tournament, the Palestinian players visited the Foreign Ministry building. “It was an amazing experience to witness the connection between the Israeli diplomats and the Palestinian players who beat them," remarked Ilan Kowalsky, Athletic Director of the Interdisciplinary Center and one of the tournament’s organizers. "The Palestinians are younger and better trained in basketball, which explains their advantage over the older Israeli team.”
