Livni to Mofaz: You are my number 2

Kadima chairwoman offers transportation minister to head party's campaign headquarters. Meanwhile, Barak determines Labor's roster for 18th Knesset will be determined via primaries

Kadima Chairwoman Tzipi Livni told Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz on Thursday that she considers him her "no. 2" in the party, regardless of the technical issues related to securing him a spot on Kadima's Knesset roster.

Livni offered Mofaz to head the party's campaign headquarters and work together to unite the party.

On Tuesday Kadima's legal advisor, Attorney Eitan Haberman said that after examining the party's code it seems Kadima will not be able to secure the second slot on its roster for Mofaz.

Following Mofaz's loss to in the primary elections to succeed Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, many in the party demanded his position in Kadima's Knesset roster be secured without an additional election.

Meanwhile, after opinions were voiced within the Labor party about leaving the same roster as was used in the 17th Knesset for the upcoming elections, Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced on Thursday that the next Knesset roster will be determined through primaries.

In recent days, disagreements arose amongst the party’s senior officials regarding the way in which the roster will be determined.

No time to waste

Knesset Members Yoram Marciano, Nadia Hilou and Shakib Shanan announced in the factional meeting that they support duplicating the roster. However, MKs Shelly Yacimovich, Ami Ayalon and Agriculture Minister Shalom Simhon are interested in primaries.

Labor Secretary-General Eitan Cabel began quickly laying the grounds for elections and he intends on convening the party's committee within 10 days to two weeks.

“I want the party’s internal procedures to be complete by the end of the month of November,” Cabel told Ynet on Wednesday.

“The schedule does not allow us to waste time and therefore we must act as soon as possible. We do not plan on opening the pollbook and there won’t be another census before the primaries.”

Barak started dealing with the formation of an election headquarters. Secretary-General Cabel will head it and the remaining positions have not yet been conclusively determined.

MK Shelly Yacimovich is interested in heading the party’s information headquarters, but a source in Labor has said that there has been tension between her and Cable as of late.
