Palestinian jailed for trying to smuggle military equipment

Hebron resident sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison after being convicted of planning to illegally import telescopic rifle lenses, M-16 assault rifle magazines and wiretapping devices designated for Gaza

The Jerusalem District Court on Wednesday sentenced a 33-year-old car dealer from the West Bank city of Hebron to three-and-a-half years in prison for contacting a foreign agent.

Saadi Jamjum was convicted of attempting to smuggle military equipment from China inside a container designated for toys and then transfer the apparatus to the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

According to the verdict, Jamjum planned to smuggle 1,000 radio devices, 400 cell phones, 60 telescopic rifle lenses, 2,000 M-16 assault rifle magazines, 2,000 pistol magazines and wiretapping devices.

The judges ruled that the offense could have greatly damaged Israel's security and warranted significant jail time.

"Jamjum and the foreign agent struck a deal to smuggle a substantial amount of military equipment to Gaza under the guise of importing toys," according to the verdict.

"The amounts prove that the equipment was earmarked for a hierarchical organization rather than private individuals."
