Iran says may agree to fuel swap deal

Foreign Ministry spokesman says Iran may be able to 'arrive at practical agreements' on proposal put forth by Turkey, Brazil, by which Iran will send its uranium to Turkey and receive nuclear fuel in exchange

Iran can work with proposals put forward by Turkey and Brazil to try to revive a stalled UN-backed nuclear fuel swap deal, a senior official said in remarks published on Saturday.

"New formulas have been raised about the exchange of fuel ... I think we can arrive at practical agreements on these formulas," the Iran daily quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast as saying. He did not give details.

According to the deal backed recently by the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran will transfer its uranium to another country, probably Turkey, and will receive nuclear fuel in exchange.

Mehmanparast spoke ahead of a scheduled visit by the leaders of the two countries next week, who will arrive in order to discuss the swap deal.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad earlier this week agreed "in principle" to Brazilian mediation on the proposed fuel swap with world powers, aimed at allaying Western suspicions over Tehran's atomic ambitions.
