In 1958, Egypt and Syria established the United Arab Republic (UAR). Hussein, who was already the king of Jordan at the time, was threatened by the union because of his pro-Western policy. He asked his cousin, Iraq's King Faisal II, to send military aid. Faisal sent over a brigade under the command of Abd al-Karim Qasim, but Qasim saw it as an opportunity to seize power in Iraq, ending Faisal II's rule. Shortly afterwards, Qasim's rule ended in the same way
