Iran opposition group exposes secret nuke site

Mujahideen Khalq opposition group says secret Iranian uranium-enrichment site located northwest of Tehran; construction of facility got underway in 2005, despite Ayatollah regime's claim it halted nuke work that year, group says

Race to bomb continues: An Iranian opposition group exposed Thursday the existence of another uranium enrichment site in the country operated by Iran's Defense Ministry and located in mountainous terrain near Tehran.

According to the Mujahideen Khalq, the secret nuclear facility is located in the city of Abyek, some 120 kilometers (roughly 75 miles) northwest of Tehran.

A group representative said the Iranian authorities have so far spent $100 million on the project and completed about 85 percent of the construction.

The group presented satellite pictures of excavation work at the alleged nuclear site, which they said supports information gleaned from sources "inside the Iranian regime" and showed what they said were four entrances and a tunnel.

In a statement to journalists in Washington, the group stressed the significance of the construction start date; that same year, the Ayatollah regime claimed that it halted work on its nuclear program.

Information handed over to US

Mujahideen Khalq members said they handed the information over to the US Administration, to the American Congress, and to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) – which have yet to respond.

At this time, the international community is familiar with two Iranian uranium-enrichment sites, in Natanz and near the city of Qom.

A report published earlier this week by the IAEA claimed that Iran boosted its production of low-enriched uranium by 15% since May of this year The agency also expressed its concern over Iran's continued efforts to produce a nuclear warhead that can be fitted on a ballistic missile.
