Website offers 'Rick Perry Mezuzah'
Texas governor honored for Mezuzah Law he signed in June. 'Who knows? Maybe he'll put it on the Texas State House or even the White House if he is lucky,' says website owner
The law was signed to counter condominium associations which were prohibiting the object affixed to the doorframe in Jewish homes.
Aaron Shaffier, the owner of the website, explained: "When I read about the law, I noticed that it permits Mezuzahs up to 25 inches (63 cm). On the one hand I thought it was great that this law was passed.
"On the other hand, I thought it was a bit sad that there was a need for such a law in the USA. I thought it would be cool to have a 26 inch mezuzah case made and name it after Governor Perry, both to honor him for passing this law and to push the envelope a bit."
Shaffier, a Beitar Illit resident who owns the Los Angeles based website MezuzahStore.com, contacted Yossi Ziv of CJ Art in Azor who was very excited about the idea and got to work on it. He delivered it just a few days before Governor Perry announced his candidacy for president of the United States.
"We are not trying to endorse any candidate in the election," said Shaffier. "I just thought this would be something cute to commemorate this law. Who knows? Maybe he'll follow in the footsteps of Charlie Christ (former governor of Florida) and put this mezuzah on the Texas State House or even the White House if he is lucky."
Recently there have been court battles in several US states over the right of Jewish residents to display a mezuzah on their condominium door. In Texas, the legislature passed a law overriding the ability of condominium associations to ban religious displays.
The bill was signed into law on June 17 by Governor Rick Perry. Perry has been in the spotlight since he announced his Presidential bid on August 13.
