The Kishon River has suffered wastewaterpollution following the recent days' stormy weather, Ynet learned Friday. According to Sharon Nisim of the Kishon River Authority, Thursday and Friday's heavy rains have caused sewage from the Haifa Oil Refineries and the Haifa wastewater treatment facility to flood the river. The Kishon River is a 70km-long perennial stream, flowing down from the Gilboa Mountains. It is considered to be one of the most polluted rivers in Israel and has been the subject of controversy regarding the struggle to improve the water quality. Haifa Oil Refineries Spokesman Yiftach Kremer said that the heavy rain, and a lighting strike which hit the facility on Thursday, have resulted in a malfunction that, in turn, caused the oil leak. "We have been working to contain the problem and absorb the oil in coordination with the Kishon Authority and the Environmental Protection Ministry," he said. Nisim said that while the heavy rain was diluting the pollutants, the river has suffered nonetheless. "One the rain subsides we will test the water. It's hard to assess the damage at this point, but the river's eco-system has definitely been affected," she said. Follow Ynetnews on Facebook and Twitter
