The Energy and Water Ministry announced a new environmental and safety code for natural gas and oil exploration, Ynet has learned. According to the ministry, it has circulated a memorandum to that effect between the companies exploring natural gas and oil and Israel's environmental groups. The Environmental Protection Ministry, Water Authority and Industry, Trade and Labor Ministry contributed to the draft. According to a ministry statement, the code aims to regulate natural resource exploration in Israel and ensure that such endeavors are preformed while maintaining both the highest standards of worker safety and minimal environmental impact. The parties have been asked to inform the ministry on any reservations they may have of the new code. The ministry is also working on a similar code for maritime explorations. "We wish to balance the needs of the energy market with those of the environment," Energy and Water Minister Uzi Landau said. "The Energy and Water Ministry strives to operate based on a wide view and while considering every aspect that can help ensure the Israeli market's stability and prosperity."
