US: Jewish newspapers swap ownership

Baltimore Jewish Times sold at bankruptcy auction for $1.26 million to owner of Washington Jewish Week

Reputable publication The Baltimore Jewish Times found itself on the auction block last week, after dire financial hardships forced on its sale.

The sale followed a Federal Bankruptcy Court ruling ordering a trustee to run Alter Communications, the weekly's publishing firm, after it was unable to reorganize under Chapter 11.

The Baltimore Jewish Times has been run by the same family since its inception 93 years ago.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the weekly was eventually sold to publisher of the Washington Jewish Week – Route 95 Publications – for $1.26 million.

Louis Mayberg, of Route 95 Publications, said that the paper "will continue to have Baltimore-based reporters covering Baltimore-based issues… I hope we'll get the support from the Baltimore Jewish Community. We will have to earn their trust and respect."

Co-publisher of the Baltimore Jewish Times Ronnie Buerger said she was pleased with the outcome: "This turned out to be, as far as I'm concerned, a very successful bidding and ending for the drama we've been through," she said.

The sale's outcome is subject to court approval.
