Tel Aviv University's Renewable Energy Center was recently awarded Israel's prestigious Center of Research Excellence citation, Ynet has learned. The REC promotes advanced research in the field of renewable energy, based on a variety of sources, including solar power, wind energy, and biomass, a power source for electric vehicles. The center is home to 55 senior researchers spanning seven faculties. The Renewable Energy Center's mission statement is to foster "A multi-disciplinary and innovative hub in a crucial area of research… To preserve the world's natural resources while advancing Israel's economy and security." Prof. Yossi Rosenwaks, head of the Renewable Energy Center, said he and his colleagues were honored: "This is a very prestigious honor, and reflects the excellence of the research groups involved." "It will enable us to do much more work and to progress much faster toward the goal of developing a power source for electric vehicles," he added. TAU hopes that the center's newfound status will help attract "the best minds in energy research… The new funding will enable the center to offer research grants and provide support for PhD and post-doctoral students," the university said in a press release. "TAU hopes to recruit leading Israeli researchers who might otherwise have sought positions abroad." Follow Ynetnews on Facebook and Twitter
