Death toll lowered to 232 in Brazil club fire stampede

Brazilian Police Maj. Cleberson Braida Bastianello said by telephone that officials have counted 232 bodies that had been brought for identification to a gymnasium in the city of Santa Maria, at the southern tip of Brazil near the borders with Argentina and Uruguay after a blaze raced through a crowded nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday.

CNN had originally reported that there were some 2000 people in the club at the time. Bastianello said that the current count lowered the death toll from 245 earlier believed killed. (News Agencies)
