US slams Syria, Iran bid for Human Rights Council

The United States says that Syria and Iran don't deserve positions on the UN's Human Rights Council because they are under investigation themselves.

Syria and Iran are candidates to join the 47-nation Geneva-based Council. US UN Ambassador Rosemary DiCarlo told reporters Thursday that "attempts by either country to join the Human Rights Council are highly inappropriate, given the Human Rights Council's existing mandates to investigation human rights violation in these countries, their egregious records on human rights, and their ongoing cooperation to suppress democratic aspirations in Syria."
