Pioneer in art film in Israel and Israel prize laureate Lia Van Leer passes away at age 90

Israel prize laureate and pioneer in the field of art film programming and film archiving in Israel Lia Van Leer died on Friday at the age of 90 at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem.

 

Van Leer was awarded the Israel Prize for her lifetime achievement and special contribution to society and the State of Israel in 2004, and also received a prize for her volunteer work form Israeli president Chaim Herzog in 1988 – the father of Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog.

 

Van Leer and her husband Wim, a Dutch engineer, pilot, playwright and film producer founding the country's first film club in 1955.
