PM taps first woman to become civil service commissioner

Netanyahu nominates Ofra Bracha, former department manager for inspection of municipal authorities and accounts manager for Interior Ministry, to head country's Civil Service Commission.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently nominated Ofra Bracha to the position of civil service commissioner, setting her on course to become the first woman to fill the position since the founding of the State of Israel.

Bracha will be examined in the coming days by the Senior Appointments Committee for the Civil Service, after which her appointment will be brought before the government for approval.

Bracha's previous positions held over the last six years include department manager for inspection of municipal authorities and accounts manager for Ministry of the Interior, during which she exposed numerous wage discrepancies in local authorities.

Another preceding position she occupied was senior advisor and chief of staff to Directors-General of the Ministries of Interior and Transportation. She holds a master's degree in public policy and a bachelor's in business administration.

The prime minister's search for a suitable candidate to replace the previous commissioner Moshe Dayan, who finished his duties on May 27, has been ongoing for weeks. Udi Prawer has been serving as his replacement since.

At first Netanyahu expressed a preference to appoint former Treasury Accountant-General Michal Abadi-Boyanjo, but Minister of Health Yaakov Litzman poured cold water on the idea and threatened resignation if it went through.

Backing down from appointing Abadi-Boyanjo, Netanyahu remained without a commissioner until Bracha entered the equation after Minister of the Interior Aryeh Deri recommended her appointment, sources said.

Bracha, born in 1961, is a married mother of three. One of her daughters serves as secretary in the Prime Minister's Office.
