Over 1,000 Arad residents protest

More than 1,000 residents of the southern city of Arad took part on Wednesday in a rally calling to preserve the city's secular character, in the face of its growing ultra-Orthodox population.

Wednesday's rally came after some 200 secular protestors demonstrated in Arad last Saturday night against what they view as the city's religious population infringing upon their freedoms. Prior to that, an incident was reported in which burning tires were allegedly thrown by Gur Hasidim at a home where secular people live.

Saturday's demonstration turned violent after Gur followers arrived at the scene, with members of both groups clashing with one another.
