US ambassador Haley throws reception for countries objecting to UN censure

US Ambassador to UN Haley throws reception for ambassadors of 64 countries who objected to UN vote censuring US for Jerusalem recognition; 'It's easy for friends to be with you in the good times, but those with you in challenging times will never be forgotten,' Haley says.

The United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley hosted a special reception Thursday for ambassadors of the 64 countries that objected to the UN General Assembly's resolution to disavow President Donald Trump's decision recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The invitation was sent to the eight ambassadors of the countries who voted against the resolution—including Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon—the 35 ambassadors of countries that abstained and, lastly, to the 21 ambassadors of countries who were not present during the vote.

"It's easy for friends to be with you in the good times, but it's the friends who are with you during the challenging times that will never be forgotten. Thank you to the 64," Haley said, adding, "President Trump and I have a list of the countries that supported us in a drawer."

Trump himself provided a personal welcoming message to the reception's attendees, screened during the event. "We greatly appreciate your support," the president said. "The US has retained its commitment to long-lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace, and there's no reason for that peace not to be attained. We'll continue working with partners such as yourselves to promote a future of peace and prosperity for the region, its people and the world. Thank you."

Ambassador Danon said, "Israel has no better friend than the United States and the US has no more loyal ally than Israel. We thank the US and Ambassador Haley on their strident stance alongside us, and historical truth… The leadership the US has shown has once again exposed the hypocrisy of Palestinian leadership, which talks peace while doing everything in its power to avoid negotiations."
