Egypt's parliament says municipal elections expected in 2019

CAIRO – Egypt's official news agency says the country is planning to hold local council elections next year, the first since the country's 2011 the uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

The state-run MENA agency quoted the parliamentary spokesman Wednesday as saying the elections will take place in the first half of 2019 after a local administration law was passed by legislators.

Authorities had said repeatedly they would hold municipal elections last year but they didn't take place.

Local councils were disbanded in 2011, with local affairs being run by government-appointed officials since then. Egypt's last local elections were in 2008. They were mostly won by the now disbanded National Democratic Party, the country's dominant party until the overthrow of Mubarak.
