Israel's chief rabbi calls German Jewry to proudly wear skullcaps

Israel's Chief Rabbi David Lau called the Jewish community in Germany on Tuesday to continue proudly wearing skullcaps in public areas. "The skullcap is a Jewish symbol, wear it proudly," the rabbi said.

"While Jews are not supposed to be asked to remove the skullcap, law enforcement authorities in Germany must ensure Jews' safety," he stated." I intend to raise this matter with the relevant authorities."

The rabbi's statement followed a recommendation by Joseph Schuster, chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany organization, issued to members of his community and advising them to refrain from being seen with a skullcap in main streets across Germany.
