Ailing PA chief shown reading paper with inciting caricature

PA President Abbas, currently hospitalized in Ramallah, was photographed reading PA daily that published caricature of IDF soldier feeding infant bottle of poison; infant depicted in caricature is Lila Randur, 8 month old who allegedly died after inhaling tear gas at Gaza border protest last week; unclear whether photo was published as act of defiance against Israel or as mere oversight.

A photo of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, currently hospitalized at a Ramallah hospital, showed the leader reading a newspaper that included an inciting caricature depicting an IDF soldier giving a Palestinian baby a bottle of poison, swapping out the milk bottle.

Abbas, who was said to be suffering from pneumonia, was shown in photos released Monday walking the hospital's corridor along with his two sons Yasser and Tareq, ostensibly to prove the aging leader's health was improving.

The name on the caricature was Lila Randur, an eight-month-old Palestinian infant said to have died after inhaling tear gas during Gaza Strip border protests last week—despite the fact a Gaza medical official voiced his doubts as to the officially announced cause of death.

It was initially unclear whether Abbas's office published the photo that showed him reading the newspaper with the prominent caricature as an act of defiance against Israel or that it was merely an oversight, lending credence to the Israeli allegations of rampant incitement in Palestinian society.

The newspaper Abbas was shown reading is Al-Hayat al-Jadida, the Palestinian Authority's official daily that always toes Abbas's party line. The issue in question was published Monday.
