1. Are the ultra-orthodox anti-Zionist?
Daisy ,   USA   (05.25.06)
I'm confused.
2. #1 daisy not all of them are anti zionist...
(05.25.06)
...but some are. depends which sect but that is not the issue that we have with them this is the issue: 1).over 95% dont serve in army 2).over 95% dont work so not paying taxes 3). over 95% are on state subsidies so they can live 4). they have, on average, 9 children (can you imagine what kind of a father doenst work to feed his kids?) 5). its only really the mizrahi haredim and guys from gush who go and teach regular people in the street torah, the rest which is the majority of haredim only teach among themselves so thats the problem
3. Daisy: Most ultra-Orthodox are not anti-Zionist
Karen R ,   Maryland   (05.25.06)
Mr. Gliss was either misquoted or was not paying attention to what he said. What he probably meant, was "any time anything secular...." Most ultra-Orthodox are not anti- Zionist. They appreciate the State of Israel and pray for its welfare. There are a few groups, such as Satmar, who are very anti-Zionist, but they are not the majority at all.
4. phenomenon NOT problem
gabriela ben ari ,   jerusalem   (05.25.06)
One more example of Ynet's hareidi hatred. This is a totally unnecessary post, only done to provoke discussions. Excuse me, why do you speak about this phenomenom, as a PROBLEM, why a problem??? may be foy you Sela, this is definatelly a blessing for others, By the way - I'm no hareidi fan - , NONETHELESS, I try to rise myself from pure egoistic interests and welcomes any hareidi neighbours moving into my environ. This guys are reproducing far faster than others, so what do you expect? Isn't it a blessing onto itself? Just on the eve of Jerusalem Reunification day, when after having being expelled into exile for so long, isn't it an opportunity to express unity and ahavat hinam? It seems to me that non religious could tolarate just any ethnic group, just not our own true living jews
5. Far better all Orthodox than fifth columnist arabs & leftist
Bunnie Meyer ,   Santa Monica, CA   (05.25.06)
6. To #1
Roni   (05.25.06)
Good question, I'm confused myself. Unless ultra-Orthodox oppose the state of Israel, I do understand why this article sees them moving in as a problem. I believe only a tiny minority of ultra-Orthodox are anti-Zionist (something around 1% of them - Neturei Karta nut types).
7. Keep In Mind, Ultra-Orthodox and Their Avg. of 9 Children is
What Repopulates the ,   Jewish People   (05.25.06)
8. #1 Is an example of the media brainwashing
(05.25.06)
It is only the NK Neutra Katra that call Jews pigs and wave plo flags, they are an extremly small band of people, people only know about them because the media promotes them and tries to convey all Torah observant Jews are like that. and to #2, give me actual data, links not to some peace now anti jewish group but some actual Knesset or some real link. They do work, it is only the media and your anti-sematic views of your fellow Jews that blind you so. Man you are a sick individual to spit on your fellow Jew.
9. jerusalem-the holy city
debra ,   usa   (05.25.06)
what is this prejudice against the ultra-orthodox? i'm certain they love hashem. and he loves them.
10. Jerusalem, the Jewish holy city..who cares, Heredi, Secular
David ,   Boston, USA   (05.25.06)
Its our Holy Capital. All Jews should rejoice in it. All Jews should have at least 4 children. Jerusalem should respect the minorities, but never forget, its a Jewish city, and our Capital and will never again be occupied by Arabs, British, or any other foreign invader.
11. JERUSALEM SHOULD BE RELIGIOUS CITY...
SECULAR SABRAS ,   MOVE TO TEL-AVIV   (05.25.06)
12. Jerusalem
Shoshi ,   New York/Jerusalem   (05.25.06)
The problem is that the character of Jerusalem, and it is changing rapidly. Already the average Israeli (who is not charedi and not even Orthodox) does not feel comfortable in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, and feels as though it is a foreign country. There are few jobs in Jerusalem and it is becoming a poorer and poorer city. For those few non-Orthodox people who can find work and do live in Jerusalem, where can they live, feel comfortable, and go out and enjoy themselves or perhaps spend a cultural evening. The city is unrecognizable to people who lived there only a decade or two ago.
13. Ultra Orthodox Control of Jerusalem
Dave ,   San Diego, CA   (05.25.06)
The solution is to make Jerusalem the capital of the Palestinian state. Better that than the haredim.
14. Simple solution
Elder of Ziyon ,   New Jersey, USA   (05.25.06)
It is a shame that the author seems to feel that making Jerusalem more holy is a bad thing, but there is a simple solution that no one would oppose: Encourage non-Hareidi couples to have 10 kids as well! This would also solve the (possibly bogus) "demographic" problem that is causing Israel's government to consider surrendering parts of Eretz Yisrael.
15. 95% of haredim don't work?
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (05.25.06)
Whose rear end did that number come from? I'm from a haredi family, there are 6 kids. My dad and mom both work. My brothers & sisters who are married all work. My younger sister and I are in college and we work full time during the summer. I also work to pay for my own tuition. If 95% of haredim don't work, why did YNet write this article: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3254478,00.html Or this article: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3251694,00.html I guess they do work, and I am the only one around here who reads the YNet business section.
16. Bunnie Meyer, no' 5
Michael Fraydon ,   Tel aviv, Israel   (05.25.06)
Good thing you are not a part of the state of affairs and therefor you opinions carry very little importance.
17. #7 : There's no reason to be proud of this
TC ,   Haifa   (05.25.06)
18. Haredi
Alex Feldman ,   USA   (05.25.06)
When men are sick they are looking for superpower. GOD, what may be more stupid idea? Just throw them all to somewhere. What may be worst them HAREDI? May be Mohamed…
19. to#10
Alex   (05.25.06)
What a u speaking? what holly? haredim is a punishment of Jews. They are not Jews – just f-g religious garbage. I don’t understand how Jews can be religious. It’s so embarrassing. It make me sick. I don’t believe that people can be so stupid.
20. #2
Gidon ,   Kiryat Sefer   (05.25.06)
What are your percentages based off??? Your own opinion which is totally inaccurate. Go and find out more about reality, it is a pity that you are living in a bubble of nonsense.
21. G-D bless the Haredim
Avraham ,   Netivot   (05.25.06)
Jerusalem is the capital of Am Yisroel & should be a religious city. It's about time the press stops Haredi bashing & starts reporting the news, & facts pertinent to us today, eg: how Olmert is destroying Israel.
22. To #2 and his friends
Nimrod ,   Ministry of Finance   (05.25.06)
I have been working for twenty years in the Income Tax Authority of the Ministry of Finance ("pakid shuma").. From the data in my possession, I deduce that during the last 5 years, the total population of Jerusalem has paid more income tax per household than the total population of Tel-Aviv including Ramat-Aviv. This is quite astonishing, taking into account the extreme poverty of large parts of Jerusalem, the affluence of large parts of Tel-Aviv, the development of a new "Silicon Valley" in the North of Tel-Aviv, and the fact that for tax purposes Bnei Braq is not part of the city of Tel-Aviv!How can it be explained? 1. Our experience has taught us that in average, poor people are more honest than rich people. 2. Our experience has taught us that in average, religious people are more honest than non-religious people. 3. There are countries in the world where the more you earn, the more income tax you pay. In Israel this is not the case. Anyway, what #2 writes is a gross distortion of reality and an incitation to hatred.
23. bad Ynet
eddie ,   London UK   (05.25.06)
i am not haredi, but why is this a "problem", the problem is low numbers of jews, not high, how ridiculous can you guys be!
24. Very objective headline! Haredi-phobes!
(05.25.06)
Im not Haredi at all but I accuse all you phobes for letting the city become this way, thanks to your scaredycat attitudes. Jerusalem is for ALL Jews! (and well-behaved non-Jews)
25. where do secular spawn come from?
moshiach ,   jslm   (05.25.06)
all secular are descendants of ultra-orthodox physically. if there are more charedi in population the result ultimately is more secular as well secular individuals are the result of non-holy souls that invade religious bodies. it can be through the seduction of the evil side, breakdown of tradition through wars, poverty etc. (for hidden reasons). some charedi bodies have souls much more evil than those in secular bodies because the side of evil is crafty, hence the explanation of "haredi" perverts, evil and foolish rabbis, and neturi karta nazi lovers. all secular jews are ultimately destroyed through intermarriage, plague, war, or the creators wrath manifested through "anti-semitism" or other wholesale elimination. people wake up - physical life is incredibly short. spiritual life is forever. Forever pleasant for the children who genuinely search and follow the torah to the best of their ability. Forever torturous for the evil who embrace animalhood!
26. anti-zionist?
ben.hirschler ,   Israel   (05.25.06)
I think the term zionist needs to be defined! If "ultra-Orthodox" were anti zionist they would not live in Israel Zionist means one who loves Israel. I think Mr. Gliss was so excited that he misued the word zionist when in fact he really meant to say secularist. Thoedore hertzel was by no means a Zionist, let us not forget he was ready to settle for a jewish Homeland in Uganda, Eretz Yisroel had no special meaning to him and his cohorts, they had no special love for This Land nor did they have any perception of it's holiness. The Ultra Orthodox on the other hand love This land and sacrifice much to immigrate here and to live here. I do not see conservative and reform jews making aliya and leaving the fleshpot of the USA. I do see many secular Israelis making YERIDA and leaving israel
27. Simple Solution
David ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (05.25.06)
If you really do think its a problem and really do think it requires a solution then the answer is simple. Start having 10+ children per family. You will then remove the dual demographic threat you perceive in the Arabs and the Hareidim. If you aren't willing to do that you should remains silent, because its your own choice that's killing you.
28. Simpler Solution
Iamthewitness.com ,   Braband, Netherlands   (05.25.06)
I thought that children are born out of love? Not as a weapon of war. It's verry cynical to create live in order to detroy. Perhabs people should start talking personally with 'the enemy' and discover we're al on the same boat, and we could have a good life when we create understanding and stop listenin to out 'so called' leaders who play devide and rule through fear for as long as human's are arround. One's problem with a neighbour can be just One's own stubborn fearing mind. We get what we give. People it can be beautifull world. Love, peace and water, Kars
29. north-south Jerusalem
lynn ,   california   (05.25.06)
For most of us, Jewish babies are a source for celebration, after the decimation of the holocaust. LLet's I say , yes to internal aliya
30. Secular Spawn??? How insulting
Claudia ,   Tampa, FL USA   (05.25.06)
No wonder the secular Israeli population are coming to despise the ultra religious. Not only do they have to support them but they must also abide by their rules and listen to this crap.
